At No Loading Games, we design gaming experiences that are easy to learn, but hard to master. Cyberpunk: Edgerunners – Hunted follows that philosophy with an Initiation Scenario. This is a guided first run designed to introduce the most important core mechanics. In this blog post, we’ll walk through the board game as it plays in the Tutorial Scenario.
Note: this blog post features images and videos with a prototype of Cyberpunk: Edgerunners - Hunted. The final version will differ slightly. Acrylic standees are sold separately.
Understanding the Edgerunner Phase
The board game Cyberpunk: Edgerunners – Hunted plays in two phases, Edgerunner Phase and Enemy Phase that alternate continuously.
Every game begins in the Edgerunner Phase. This is when players make their move. Unlike traditional turn-based games, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners – Hunted is played in real time. Since time is ticking, don’t wait for each player to finish their move. You can act all at the same time, but do make sure you communicate your plan with the rest of the crew! The best crews aren’t just quick, they are also coordinated. Call out your moves, share resources, and don’t leave anyone lagging behind.
During the Edgerunner Phase, you have several options on what you can do. You can move through Night City and discover new areas, enemies, and resources. You can also choose to face enemies in a fight before they move onto you in the upcoming Enemy phase.
EXPLORING NIGHT CITY
As you move across Night City, you’ll expand the map by adding new Map Tiles and Connector Tiles that reveal new paths, risks, and opportunities.
Watch an example of David moving through Night City and picking up an Ammo tile! Always keep the Ammo tiles with the value side hidden face down until you're ready to fight an enemy.
FIGHTING ENEMIES
The Edgerunner phase is also the perfect opportunity to eliminate enemies before they get a chance to disrupt your legendary run. Be careful though, because you need enough Ammo to rip through the enemy’s resistance. Their resistance is indicated by the number of map spaces between the two of you.
However, if you initiate an attack and fail to eliminate the enemy, they move toward you. If that move brings them to the same space as you, then the hourglass moves one slot to the right, costing you precious time.
If you put all this together, here is what an Edgerunner phase looks like.
ENEMY PHASE
When all players are done taking action, the game moves into Enemy Phase. This is when every enemy on the map hunts the Edgerunners by moving towards the closest Edgerunner.
Any fallen enemies from the previous Edgerunner Phase stands up and remains at their spot for the current phase. They will only move at the next Enemy phase.
HOW THE GAME ENDS
Once all enemies have completed their actions, the game moves back into the Edgerunner phase. It will cycle like this until either time runs out (in other words, the hourglass is empty at the last slot in the time tracker) or until all Edgerunners have reached the Exit Map Tile AND completed the mission.
tldr; the objective in Cyberpunk: Edgerunners – Hunted is to work with your crew to complete your mission and reach the Exit before time runs out.
